Bollywood star Ajay Devgn, who has an extended guest appearance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, has wrapped up his portion for the eagerly awaited film. The actor had only one day’s shoot left when Bhansali tested positive for the coronavirus and the team stalled shoot for a couple of days.

Gangubai Kathiawadi, which stars Alia Bhatt in the titular role, reunites Devgn with Bhansali after a long gap of 22 years. The duo last worked together on the 1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, which also featured Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in central roles.

A source from the sets of Gangubai Kathiawadi told a publication, “They last worked together in 1999 in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Since then, they have been trying to come together again. But something or the other kept going wrong. They are finally collaborating again and it seems like they never stopped working together.”

According to reports, Bhansali is so impressed with Devgn’s presence in the film that he has decided to extend his role.

Interestingly, Ajay Devgn was Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s first choice for the role of Peshwa Bajirao in his 2015 magnum-opus Bajirao Mastani. But the actor did not accept the offer as he felt he was already doing something similar in his home production Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020). The role then went to Ranveer Singh who received widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the Maratha ruler.

Meanwhile, Devgn is returning to direction with his next directorial venture Mayday. Apart from calling the shot, he also plays an important role in it, alongside megastar Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh. The superstar will also be seen in SS Rajamouli’s RRR and Amit Ravindernath Sharma’s Maidaan.
