  • Case listed for hearing on April 8 before a Bengaluru court

An FIR has been registered against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh at Bengaluru’s High Grounds Police Station over allegations that he insulted Hindu religious sentiments and disrespected Karnataka’s traditional Chavundi Daiva worship. The complaint relates to remarks and gestures allegedly made by Ranveer Singh during a public appearance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa on November 28, 2025.

The FIR was registered under Section 175(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a directive from a Bengaluru court. The case has been forwarded to the First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court, where the next hearing is scheduled for April 8.

Bengaluru complaint against Ranveer Singh filed by lawyer

According to an NDTV report, the complaint against Ranveer Singh was filed by Bengaluru-based lawyer Prashant Methal, who alleged that the actor made objectionable comments and gestures that mocked sacred elements of the Daiva worship tradition practiced in coastal Karnataka.

Methal had earlier filed a private complaint before the Additional Judicial Magistrate on December 27, 2025. On Friday (23), the court directed the police to formally register an FIR and initiate legal proceedings against Ranveer Singh.

Allegations linked to Chavundi Daiva and Daiva worship

The complaint alleges that during an on-stage interaction at IFFI Goa, Ranveer Singh ridiculed rituals associated with Panjurli and Guliga Daiva, spirit deities revered in parts of Karnataka. The complainant claimed that Singh mimicked movements associated with the Daiva tradition in an exaggerated and vulgar manner, which was perceived as disrespectful by devotees.

The complaint further alleged that Ranveer Singh referred to Chavundi Daiva, a guardian deity symbolizing divine feminine power, as a “female ghost,” a statement said to have deeply hurt religious sentiments. These remarks form a central part of the legal complaint filed in Bengaluru.

Ranveer Singh’s IFFI Goa appearance and viral videos

The controversy stems from Ranveer Singh’s appearance alongside actor-director Rishab Shetty, the creator and lead actor of the Kannada film Kantara. While praising Shetty’s performance, Ranveer Singh reportedly said, “That was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost enters your body,” referring to a climactic scene rooted in Daiva worship traditions.

Following the remark, Ranveer Singh went on to mimic the character on stage. While the moment drew laughter from parts of the audience, videos of the incident later circulated widely on social media and triggered criticism from religious groups and cultural organizations.

In another video that surfaced online, Ranveer Singh was seen continuing the mimicry even after stepping off the stage, despite Rishab Shetty repeatedly gesturing for him to stop. The clips went viral, intensifying backlash and calls for legal action.

Previous complaint against Ranveer Singh in Goa

This is not the first complaint filed against Ranveer Singh in connection with the same incident. On December 2, 2025, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti filed a complaint in Panaji, Goa, accusing Ranveer Singh of hurting Hindu religious sentiments. The organization demanded legal action and a public apology from the actor.

Ranveer Singh issues public apology

Following the backlash, Ranveer Singh issued a public apology through his official Instagram account. In his statement, Singh said that his intention was to highlight Rishab Shetty’s “brilliant performance” in Kantara and emphasized his respect for India’s cultural diversity.

“If anything I said has hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologize,” Ranveer Singh wrote in his post.

Legal proceedings and wider debate

The FIR against Ranveer Singh adds to broader discussions in India’s entertainment industry around cultural sensitivity, artistic expression, and public accountability. The case will now proceed before the Bengaluru court, with the April 8 hearing expected to determine the next course of action.

As the legal process continues, Ranveer Singh has not issued any further statements beyond his public apology. Authorities have not commented on whether additional sections may be added to the FIR as the investigation progresses.
