As the nation grapples with economic hurdles, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has urged political parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP), to come together to ensure the success of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement. Speaking at a United National Party (UNP) rally on Labour Day, Wickremesinghe underscored the significance of maintaining economic stability to prevent a recurrence of the 2022 crisis.

Wickremesinghe unveiled strategies to fortify the economy, such as a wage hike for plantation workers to SLR 1,700 (£4.58), and outlined plans to upgrade ‘line rooms’ into villages, providing residents with essential amenities. Additionally, he pledged to introduce initiatives aimed at nurturing a robust export economy to secure a promising future for the nation’s youth.

Addressing the opposition leader’s role in crises, Wickremesinghe remarked that leadership should have been embraced during the crisis but was declined. He asserted, “I led a party with just one seat in Parliament. Nonetheless, I took on the responsibility, and UNP never shies away from challenges.”

Despite political disparities, Wickremesinghe expressed contentment with the democratic representation showcased by various party banners at Mardana Junction, underscoring the nation’s dedication to democracy.
