INDIAN actress Freida Pinto’s latest film, Trishna, has been shortlisted in the Best Film catergory at the London Film Festival, organisers said.
Loosely based on Thomas Hardy’s 19th century novel, Tess of the D’Ubervilles, the film explores contemporary attitudes towards sex in India.
Trishna is directed by British film-maker Michael Winterbottom, and features Pinto as the daughter of a rickshaw driver in rural Rajasthan. The film also stars Riz Ahmed as the son of a wealthy British Asian hotel owner who falls in love with Pinto’s character.
Among other films in the shortlist are 360 (director Fernando Meirelles), The Deep Blue Sea (Terence Davies), Shame (Steve McQueen) and We Need to Talk About Kevin (Lynne Ramsay).
The best film prize will be announced at an awards ceremony on October 26.
The London film festival runs from October 12-27.
