POLICE are appealing for information after footage of a Sikh man being beaten up in a suspected race hate attack was uploaded onto the internet.
The video currently circulating on social media – appears to show the victim trying to cover his face, as a man punches and kicks him during the brutal attack in Broad Street, Birmingham.
In the video a crowd is gathered around the man, but no-one is seen trying to help him. Officers have now urged the victim to come forward.
Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bill said: “We are aware of this video which, for some reason, is only being widely shared now.
“This assault could have taken place any time before the video was uploaded and we are currently working to establish if we have any existing crime reports which correspond with what happened.
“There are suggestions on social media that the person being assaulted was attacked because of his religion. However, we are unsure where that allegation has come from as the video itself offers no direct evidence of that being the case.
“While the circumstances around this video remain so unclear, I would urge people to remain calm and not to jump to conclusions.”
Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
