SECONDARY school students will have the chance to spend a day with former England cricket captain Alec Stewart, as part of a national competition by a leading provider of money transfer services.
MoneyGram announced on Monday (September 17) that Stewart, the most capped Test match England cricketer of all-time, will serve as the company’s ambassador for events leading up to its sponsorship of the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Twenty20 (T20) international championship which started on Tuesday (September 18).
The US-based money transfer company said sponsoring the cricket world cup was one its best decisions after India’s win last year and is holding the competition to spread the “love of cricket”.
“We see it as a responsibility,” Mark Perryman, MoneyGram’s senior regional director said.
“This is great timing, after the London Olympics we’ve heard about its legacy and the need to get more children into sport.”
Stewart added: “Just like these children, I also started out as fan who truly loved cricket. Through MoneyGram’s contest, I hope to help all the aspiring cricketers have an unforgettable experience. I look forward to the children teaching me a thing or two as well!”
Four schools will be shortlisted to win a visit from Stewart. To be in with a chance to win, they should submit 500-word essay explaining why their school should be chosen.
The schools will also be required to answer a few other questions to be eligible. All entries must be received by midnight on October 17.
Students from the winning schools will then visit the Oval Cricket Ground in London and receive coaching from the cricket star.
At the end of the event, schools will play in a tournament, with the winner receiving a trophy provided by MoneyGram.
