With this launch, IndiGo now connects multiple Indian metro cities with major Chinese destinations. Kolkata becomes the second major Indian city after New Delhi to be directly linked with Shanghai.

The airline already operates flights from Kolkata to Guangzhou and from New Delhi to Guangzhou. These routes have contributed to rebuilding connectivity after several years of disruption.

Further expansion is expected in the India–China aviation corridor. Officials have indicated that Air China plans to launch a direct New Delhi–Beijing flight starting April 21, adding capacity and options for travelers between the two countries.

IndiGo Kolkata–Shanghai route reflects cultural and historical ties

The Kolkata–Shanghai connection also carries cultural significance. Both cities share historical links through Rabindranath Tagore, whose interactions with China in the early 20th century helped shape intellectual and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

Tagore’s visit to China in 1924, along with his lectures and exchanges with Chinese scholars, contributed to discussions on Asian identity and cultural cooperation. While his ideas initially faced debate, they later came to be seen as part of a broader framework of India–China cultural engagement.

The launch of the Kolkata–Shanghai flight by IndiGo aligns with this trend, offering additional options for both business and leisure travelers.

Chinese carrier China Eastern has also resumed flights between Shanghai and Delhi, contributing to the gradual normalization of aviation links.

IndiGo Kolkata–Shanghai service signals future growth

The new Kolkata–Shanghai flight positions IndiGo to capture growing demand in the India–China travel corridor. As connectivity improves and more routes are introduced, airlines are expected to play a central role in supporting trade, tourism, and business travel.
