BRITISH police searching for an Indian student who disappeared during New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city of Manchester found a body in a canal on Tuesday (January 22).
Souvik Pal, an 18-year-old student at Manchester Metropolitan University in northwest England, had been missing since spending the New Year with friends at a nightclub in the city.
Police said the body was found in a canal in the Old Trafford area of the city, which is home to the stadium of Manchester United Football Club.
“Specialist officers made the discovery in the Bridgewater Canal,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.
“Formal identification is not due to take place until after the body has been safely recovered.
“The family of Souvik Pal has been informed of this development, and specially trained officers are in regular contact with them.”
Pal’s father Santanu had flown from the family’s home city of Bangalore in Karnataka to help with the police search.
