ANY EATERY that comes with a Best Chinese Restaurant tag from Zagat has a lot to live up to and Kai does not disappoint.
From the moment you walk into this plush restaurant in the heart of London, you are quite clearly in a special Oriental zone. Once you have had a chance to settle in, you are made to feel completely at ease by the attentive staff.
We started by ordering some red wine from an extremely impressive wine list, so best to take some advice on that one. For starters, we decided to split some deep-fried prawn-stuffed Chinese croissants, rather creatively named Parcels of Prosperity. The other options sounded equally inviting – Oriental Lamb Shank and A Nest of Imperial Jewels.
However, this is a posh Chinese restaurant that also offers the dishes you are used to. While the main-course menu is packed with chicken, lamb and seafood dishes, including a Chilean sea bass fillet and sirloin with Tau Pan sauce, traditional favourites such as sweet and sour pork and szechuan chicken are very much there too. Vegetarians are also not forgotten, with some scrumptious asparagus and spinach options.
The desserts sound equally delectable, but a jump straight to dessert cocktails is highly recommended. The Tiramisu cocktail is guaranteed to round off your meal perfectly.
At around £40 per head, this is not a cheap dinner, but promises value for money. Currently, Kai is also hosting a summer promotion package with Spa Illuminata for £125.
