In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Rohan Bopanna, the top Indian doubles player, along with his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, continued their sensational Wimbledon journey by securing a spot in the semi-finals.
The duo achieved a hard-fought victory with a score of 6-7 (6-3), 7-5, 6-2 against the Dutch pair of Tallon Griekspoor and Bart Stevens.
This marks 43-year-old Bopanna’s third Wimbledon semi-final appearance, with the previous one dating back to 2015.
With a noteworthy achievement of being a runner-up in the 2010 US Open, Bopanna has made four Grand Slam semi-finals in men’s doubles.
In their latest endeavour, the sixth-seeded Indo-Australian duo, consisting of Bopanna and his partner, faces a formidable challenge in the top-seeded Dutch-British pair of Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski as they vie for a spot in the final at Wimbledon.
The unseeded Dutch duo provided fierce opposition, extending the opening set to its limits and engaging in a 45-minute battle before ultimately claiming victory in the tie-breaker.
In a twist of events, Griekspoor-Stevens managed to secure a break in the opening game of the second set against Bopanna-Ebden.
However, the Indo-Aussie duo swiftly fought back, breaking Griekspoor-Stevens in return and capitalising on the crucial seventh game.
Despite the efforts of Griekspoor-Stevens, who managed to level the set at 5-all, Bopanna and Ebden broke their opponents in the 11th game.
They held onto their serve in the following game, ultimately clinching the second set after an intense battle lasting 40 minutes.
The third set was a cakewalk for Bopanna and Ebden as they broke the Dutch pair twice, in the first and fifth games, before wrapping the match in a one-hour 54 minutes battle.
