INDIA’S Gagan Narang won his fourth gold medal on Saturday (October 9) as the hosts continued to dominate the shooting medals at the Commonwealth Games.
His victory took India’s medal tally at the range to a total of 21 with 12 gold, seven silver and two bronze.
Narang, who has entered in six events at the Games, is on course to equal compatriot Samresh Jung, who won five golds in the 2006 Melbourne Games.
He won the 50m Rifle 3 Positions individual event with a score of 1262.2 in the final round breaking his own Games record both in the qualification and in the final round.
Scotland’s Jonathan Hammond came second with a total of 1255.3 and England’s James Huckle came third with 1254.9 points.
Indian pistol shooter Vijay Kumar clinched his third gold of the Games and his country’s second of the day when he won the 25m Centrefire Pistol Pairs event in the company of Harpreet Singh.
The duo scored a total of 1159 points with Kumar shooting a total of 583 and Singh scoring 576 points.
Kumar had previously won the gold in the 25m Rapid Fire pairs and individual event and has one more event left on Sunday (October 10) to compete in.
The Indians broke by a single point the 16-year-old Games record set by compatriots Jaspal Rana and Ashok Pandit in the 1994 Games in Victoria, Canada.
New Zealand picked up their first shooting medal in the Games through Greg Yelavich and Alan Earle who had a total of 1140 points.
This is Yelavich’s 12th Commonwealth Games medal and the Auckland-based shooter has the distinction of winning more medals than any Kiwi in the Games.
“I am so excited, I could almost do a jig like a touchdown on the football field. Its a real buzz,” he said.
“This is just as good as the first one. Just being here and wearing this Silver Fern is big.”
Earlier in the day, Malaysian women’s team won the gold in the 10m Air rifle pairs event.
