EVER wondered what life in the Royal Navy is like? This is your chance to experience it firsthand.

 

The Asian Media and Marketing Group (AMG), publisher of Garavi Gujarat and Eastern Eye, is offering 10 readers (male or female, aged 18-25 years) the chance to spend a weekend with the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. Food and accommodation will be provided.

 

This prize, which will be conducted over the weekend of March 22, comprises the opportunity to live onboard HMS Bristol (including food, accommodation and travel to and from Portsmouth as well as between exhibits only, excluding personal expenditure or incidental costs), a day’s sailing on the Solent (weather permitting) and visits (a tour of the historic dockyard including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, plus a tour of the naval base and a visit to a working military ship).

 

It is the responsibility of the prize-winners to ensure that they have valid identification.

 

Suitable warm clothing (trousers, smart jeans, shoes, trainers etc) will be required throughout the weekend.

 

The prizes are subject to availability and non-transferable; there are no cash alternatives.

All you have to do for a chance to win is answer the following questions correctly:

 

1. List the types of ships and submarines currently in service in the Royal Navy (RN)?

 

2. What are the names of the two future aircraft carriers?

 

3. Where are the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) units located in London and what are they called?

 

4. Name one other RNR unit location in the UK.

 

5. From what ages can you join the RNR and Royal Marines Reserves (RMR) for both officers and other ranks/ratings?

 

6. The RN has five facets or arms, i.e. ‘surface feet’. List the other four facets.

 

7. List the six ‘primary’ roles of the RN.

 

8. List the five ‘maritime security’ roles undertaken by the RN.

 

9. From the numerous careers available within the RN and RNR, explain in no more than 50 words what job opportunity attracts you, and how you can see yourself fulfilling that role.

10. Where is your nearest Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO)?

Terms and conditions:

 

1. This competition is open to male and female residents of the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man aged 18-25 years.

 

2. Details of how to enter form part of the terms and conditions. It is a condition of entry that all rules are accepted as final and that the competitor agrees to abide by these rules.

The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

 

3. Late, illegible, incomplete, defaced or corrupt entries or entries sent through agencies and third parties will not be accepted. No responsibility can be accepted for lost entries and proof of dispatch will not be accepted as proof of receipt.

 

4. The winners will be drawn at random from all entries received by the closing date. The winners’ names and counties can be obtained by sending a sae to Minaxi Mistry, Royal Navy Competition, Asian Media & Marketing Group, 1 Silex Street, London SE1 0DW by Friday, March 8, 2013.

 

5. All entries must be received by midnight on Friday, March 8, 2013.

 

6. The winners will be notified within 14 days of the closing date of the prize draw.

Should the promoter be unable to contact a winner or should a winner be unable to accept the prize, the promoter reserves the right to award the prize to an alternative winner, drawn in accordance with these terms and conditions.

 

7. The prizes as described are available on the date of publication.

 

8. Ten winners will each win a weekend from March 22, 2013, with the Royal Navy (RN) in Portsmouth, food and accommodation will be provided. Living onboard HMS Bristol (including food, accommodation and travel between exhibits), sailing on the Solent (weather permitting), visits and tour of historic dockyard to include HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, plus a tour of Naval Base and a visit to a working military ship.

 

9. The prizes are food, accommodation and travel to and from Portsmouth plus between exhibits and do not include personal expenditure or incidental costs. Competition winners will be required to arrive at Whale Island main gate Portsmouth by 1430 on March 22. It is the responsibility of the prize-winners to ensure they have a valid picture identification i.e. driver’s license/passport. Those who do not hold either can be dealt with on an individual basis. Suitable clothing (trousers, smart jeans, shoes and trainers) will be required throughout the weekend’s events.

 

10. The prizes are subject to availability, non transferable; there are no cash alternatives.

 

11. Events may occur that render the prize draw itself or the awarding of the prize may not be possible due to reasons beyond the control of the promoter or RN and accordingly, the promoter or RN may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the competition and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the promoter or RN as a result thereof.

 

12. In the event of a tie, the judge’s decision is final.

 

13. AMG is responsible for the first part of the promotion, which is the publication of the competition draw. All other facilities connected with the provision of the prize are the responsibility of the Royal Navy.
