ONE of India's most celebrated actors, Om Puri, will appear at a special preview screening of his new film The Hundred-Foot Journey in New York this weekend, alongside award-winning actress and food expert, Madhur Jeffrey.
The star of critically acclaimed films such as Gandhi, East is East, West is West and Don 2, will attend the release of his newest movie, The
Hundred-Foot Journey, at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York this Sunday.
Broadcaster and author Jeffrey will also appear at the event to moderate a conversation about Puri's career prior to the screening. The tribute
programme will also feature clips of Puri's performances.
“The Hundred-Foot Journey is a warm, richly textured film, and a showcase for Om Puri, who has a memorable role opposite Helen Mirren,” said David Schwartz, the Museum’s Chief Curator. “The evening at the Museum is a great opportunity to pay tribute to one of the world’s most beloved and admired screen actors.”
Puri's latest film, a comedy-drama directed by Lasse Hallstrom, also features Helen Mirren, Manish Dayal, Juhi Chawla and Charlotte Le Bon. The Hundred-Foot Journey has been adapted from a book by Richard C Morais about the opening of a new Indian restaurant in the south of France next to a famous Michelin-starred eatery, which is the cause for an all-out war between the two establishments. Puri plays the patriarch of a family displaced from their native India.
"The special thing in this film would be that I am acting with Helen Mirren and they fall in love with each other. She is my Smita Patil," Puri said,
referring to the veteran Indian actress. Produced by renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg, American talk show host-actress-producer Oprah Winfrey and TV-film producer Juliet Blake, the film is set for release on August 8.
