CLASSIC plays from Tagore and Shakespeare will be given a fresh makeover as part of the Season of Bangla Drama festival.

The month long event will see 15 adaptations brought to audiences across Tower Hamlets, including Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of being Ernest.

The arts festival which is now in its 11th year, will also include a panel discussion celebrating Bengali poet and painter Rabindranath Tagore.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman said: “A Season of Bangla Drama celebrates new writing and this year’s submissions have been of an excellent standard and is testament to the incredible creativity we have. Don’t miss the plays come to life later this year. All the events are a celebration of local talent and a great way to disseminate Bengali theatre to new audiences as well as bringing old favourites to an established crowd. This insightful theatre programme continues to be relevant to residents of Tower Hamlets today with refreshing and exciting drama.”

Cllr Shafiqul Haque, cabinet member for culture added: “This is a great platform for drama groups to work together and contribute to this ever growing festival. It provides a wide ranging programme incorporating comedy, hard-hitting contemporary issues and a blend of literary traditions from east and west told with a modern British voice.”

A Season of Bangla Drama will run from November 1-30 at a number of venues across the borough. For more information go to www.towerhamletsarts.org.uk/
