AN ACCLAIMED film which portrays the struggle of an ageing and impoverished perfume seller as he gathers funds for the Haj pilgrimage has been named as India’s official entry for this year’s Oscars.
Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu won the prize for best feature film at the national film awards in India last month.
Written, directed and co-produced by debut filmmaker Salim Ahamed, the family drama stars Salim Kumar and Bollywood actress Zarina Wahab.
Kumar, who played the lead role of a struggling unani medicine and perfume salesman, was named best actor at the awards ceremony.
Supran Sen, chairman of Film Federation of India, the body that selects movies for the Acacdemy Awards, said the film was chosen among 15 other entries.
‘It is a simple story which describes human values,’ said B Lenin, chairman of the Oscar nominations committee of the federation.
