Popular comic Hasan Minhaj,Ā The Reluctant FundamentalistĀ actor Meesha Shafi, andĀ CluelessĀ star Alicia Silverstone are set to star in the Pakistani American coming-of-age filmĀ Mustache.
According to entertainment website Deadline, the film marks the directorial debut of Imran J Khan, known for the award-winning short āPromā, which was based on ideas from Minhajās stand-up special āHomecoming Kingā. Also part of the cast are Rizwan Manji (āSchittās Creekā), Atharva Verma (āStargirlā), and Ayana Manji (āRoyal Detectiveā).
Billed as a ālargely autobiographicalā feature for Khan, āMustacheā revolves around Ilyas (Verma), an eccentric 13-year-old boy who sets off to navigate the social hierarchy of his new California public school with a moustache his parents will not allow him to shave off. āIām very humbled and honoured to be partnering with the amazing people at production house MakeSay as well as the talented Christopher Storer to bring my very personal and often eccentric film, Mustache to life. I canāt think of a better team to partner with to bring this film to life,ā said Khan.
Manji will essay Hameed, Ilyasā father, and Shafi playing his mother, and Manjiās daughter Ayana will play his school friend, Yasmeen.
Details about the roles to be played by Silverstone and Minhaj havenāt been disclosed. Christina Won ofĀ BirdmanĀ fame and Jessica Sittig (MakeSay) are producing the movie along with American Light and Fixtureās Christopher Storer and Tyson Bidner, the duo behind the hit seriesĀ RamyĀ andĀ The BearĀ for Hulu and FX, respectively.
