Google Cloud has announced America-India Connect, a five-year, $15 billion investment focused on expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure, strengthening global connectivity, and reducing the risk of an emerging digital divide.
The Google initiative centers on improving subsea cable capacity, expanding fiber networks, and supporting AI-driven digital transformation across India and beyond. The company said reliable infrastructure is critical as AI technologies reshape industries, public services, and economic systems.
Google Cloud stated that the goal is to ensure the growth of AI does not result in an “AI divide,” where only select regions benefit from advanced digital capabilities. Through America-India Connect, Google aims to increase the reach, reliability, and resilience of digital networks spanning four continents.
Google Builds New Subsea Gateway in Visakhapatnam
A key component of the Google investment is the development of a new international subsea cable gateway in Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, on India’s east coast.
Currently, most international cable landing points in India are concentrated in Mumbai and Chennai. By expanding infrastructure to Vizag, Google plans to diversify landing locations and strengthen India’s digital backbone.
The move is designed to enhance economic security, improve network redundancy, and support India’s population of more than one billion people with stronger digital connectivity.
Google Expands Cable Routes Connecting India to Africa and the Pacific
On India’s east coast, Google Cloud plans to establish a direct fiber-optic route connecting Vizag and Chennai to South Africa. When combined with existing subsea systems such as Equiano and Nuvem, this corridor will link the American East Coast around Africa to India with high-capacity infrastructure.
Another planned route between Vizag and Singapore will integrate with subsea systems including Bosun and Tabua. This pathway will connect the American West Coast through Australia to India, forming a South Pacific digital corridor.
On India’s west coast, Google will build a new fiber-optic route between Mumbai and Western Australia. In combination with subsea systems such as TalayLink and Honomoana, this expansion will strengthen connections between the American West Coast, Australia, and Mumbai.
These additions will complement existing cable systems including Blue, Raman, and Sol, which already create a data corridor stretching from the American East Coast through the Red Sea to India.
Google Cloud emphasized that subsea cables are essential for internet affordability, reliability, and long-term economic development. Expanded cable capacity supports governments, enterprises, and individuals by enabling secure access to cloud platforms and AI services.
Google and Mission Karmayogi: AI Tools for 20 Million Public Servants
Beyond physical infrastructure, Google is investing in digital skills development.
Google Cloud is partnering with the Government of India’s Mission Karmayogi under the Karmayogi Bharat program to strengthen the iGOT (Integrated Government Online Training) platform.
As the primary cloud partner, Google provides secure and scalable cloud infrastructure to serve more than 20 million public servants across over 800 districts.
AI tools will be deployed to digitize legacy training materials, improve content discovery, and enable learning in more than 18 Indian languages. The objective is to make government training more accessible, searchable, and personalized.
By integrating AI into the iGOT platform, Google aims to support professional development and improve public service delivery through data-driven learning systems.
Google Positions India as a Central AI and Digital Hub
America-India Connect represents one of Google’s largest infrastructure commitments in India. The initiative positions India as a major node in global AI and cloud infrastructure.
By linking the United States, India, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific through expanded subsea cable systems and fiber networks, Google is reinforcing international digital trade routes.
The company said the initiative reflects its broader commitment to ensuring AI infrastructure remains globally accessible and resilient.
