THE 23-YEAR-OLD Delhi gang-rape victim was admitted on Thursday morning (December 27) to the intensive care unit of Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said. The hospital has state-of-the-art facilities for multiple-organ transplant.

“The patient arrived at Mount Elizabeth Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit this morning in an extremely critical condition,” the spokesperson said.

“She is being examined and the hospital is working with the Indian High Commission. We request that the privacy of the patient and family be respected,” the spokesperson said.

Earlier, the Indian High Commission in Singapore said that the plane carrying the girl landed at the Changi International Airport at 7.30 am (5 am IST).

The decision to shift the girl was taken at the highest level of the Indian government.

On December 16, the girl was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a moving bus in the national capital and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi.

The girl, battling for life for the past 10 days at Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi, remained on ventilator support during most part of her treatment in Delhi.

Dr B D Athani, Medical Superintendent of the Safdarjung Hospital, said she was given “the best of available medical aid” during her 10-day treatment at the hospital in New Delhi.

“With fortitude and courage, the girl survived the after-effects of the injuries so far well. But the condition continues to be critical. Based on the advice of a team of doctors, the Government of India made arrangements for the patient being shifted in a well-equipped air ambulance,” he said late on Wednesday night (December 26).

He said that the girl has suffered severe intestinal and abdominal injuries.

The attack sparked a wave of protests across India in which a policeman died and more than 100 police and protestors were injured.

Inquiry Commission set up, probe ordered into CM’s allegations

A Commission of Inquiry headed by a former Delhi High court judge to go into the gang-rape incident was set up on Wednesday (December 26) by the Indian government.

The Centre also ordered a probe into allegations of police interference in recording the victim’s statement.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet presided by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took the decision to set up the one-person Commission headed by Justice(retd) Usha Mehra.

The Commission, which will also suggest measures to make Delhi and NCR safer for women, will submit within three months its report to be tabled in Parliament along with action taken by the government.
