WANT to know more about creative traditions and cultural forms of India or enjoy classical dance performances and shake a leg to peppy bhangra beats?
A three-month-long exhibition, currently on in Coventry, is offering a selection of drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs and films by emerging artists from India and Pakistan.
Curated by Gerard Mermoz during a three-month journey which took him from Kochi in India to Lahore in Pakistan via Bangalore, Mumbai, Bhopal, Vadodara, Delhi, Kolkata and Santiniketan, this exhibition, which began on Friday (January 23) and will continue till April 19, shows artists redefining their place in the world at a crucial stage in the cultural life of India and Pakistan.
Named Through Other Eyes: Contemporary Art from South Asia, the exhibition is currently on at The Herbert.
It also includes works by contemporary folk and tribal artists with an aim to challenge the assumptions on which is decided what qualifies as ‘contemporary art’.
Other events include art using ‘mehndi’ on canvas, craft activities ranging from ceramic tile painting to Asian shadow puppets, talks and Bollywood screenings.
Rosie Addenbrooke, Senior Exhibitions and Events Officer at The Herbert, said the rich variety of events was in keeping with the wide range of exhibits in Through Other Eyes.
"We have organised events to appeal to a wide range of ages and interests to promote this major exhibition. Whether it is films, arts, talks, dancing or comedy, we are sure this programme will appeal to everyone. All the events are free which means it is also ideal in these tough economic times,"she said.
