A CARNIVAL-STYLE street procession featuring dhol players and dancers in costume will be the highlight of Diwali celebrations in Northampton on November 10.

Over 1,000 people are expected to attend the procession, which will dramatise the Ramayana, the story of Diwali.

There will be a procession with huge, colourful mythical beings being pulled by costumed participants and lead by dhol drummers. People dressed in costumes, with dignitaries holding up lanterns and following them will be young children carrying lanterns made in their primary schools.

The event will start with workshops at 10.30 a.m. in Northampton’s Market Square. At 1 p.m. the dance performances will commence and the highlight of the event, the procession, will kick off at 6 p.m.

Northamptonshire has hosted Diwali festivities over the last 11 years.
