PRIME Minister Gordon Brown paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi during a visit to Leicester, where a new bronze statue of the Indian leader was unveiled last week.

Brown was greeted by a small crowd on Belgrave Road, home of the new seven-and-a-half ft statue.

The prime minister was presented with flowers by a representative of the Indian charity organisation, Samanvaya Parivar, which funded the £20,000 statue created by Kolkata-based sculptor Gautam Pal.

Brown wrote a message in the visitors’ book: "This statue is an inspiration to all who will visit. It reminds us of the great courage and vision of Gandhi and the great changes we can all work together to achieve."

The statue in Leicester is the second Gandhi statue, the first installed at Tavistock Square in London in 1968.
