Veteran Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna has died at 70 at Mumbai’s HN Reliance Hospital. According to the hospital, he breathed his last at 11.20am on Thursday. He was suffering from advanced bladder carcinoma (bladder cancer). “Doctors and family were expecting a recovery but somehow his condition escalated and he succumbed today afternoon,” said a hospital source.
He was hospitalised in April first week due to severe dehydration but was later said to be stable and responding positively to treatment. Vinod, who was a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party member of the Lok Sabha from the Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab, was admitted to Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Girgaon, Mumbai. Khanna’s co-star from his popular film Amar Akbar Anthony Rishi Kapoor tweeted in response to the veteran star’s death on Thursday. Read Rishi Kapoor’s reaction here.
Ever since the news broke, industry colleagues have been expressing grief over the actor’s demise and remembering him. A photo of him with his son and wife went viral during his stay at the hospital. Khanna look extremely weak and frail in the photo which his many fans getting concerned for his health.
The actor, often called one of the most handsome men in the industry, featured in as many as 146 films. Some of his most well received works include Mere Apne, Insaaf and Amar, Akbar, Anthony. He was last seen in Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale (2015). Born on October 6, 1946, in a Punjabi family to Kamla and Kishanchand Khanna in Peshawar, Vinod studied commerce at Mumbai’s Sydenham College before moving into acting. Khanna was married to Geetanjali between 1971 and 1985 and has two sons with her, Rahul Khanna and Akshaye Khanna. He married Kavita with whom he has two children, Sakshi and Shraddha.
