MORE than half of the US children will be from minority communities by 2020 and whites will no longer make up the majority of the population, according to a new US Census Bureau report.

America is heading toward the day when whites will no longer make up the majority of the population.

“By around 2020, more than half of the nation's children are expected to be part of a minority race or ethnic group,” the Census Bureau said, putting Americans under the age of 18 at the front of a trend that will see the overall population follow suit some 20 years later.

“When that shift for the US as a whole takes place by 2044, the Census Bureau predicts no one racial or ethnic group will dominate the US in terms of size,” the report said.

“Overall, the US population is set to grow more slowly over the next few decades partly because of declining fertility rates. It's expected to hit 400 million by 2051,” it said.

By 2044, the US population as a whole is expected to become majority-minority. The native population is expected to increase by 62 million, or 22 per cent between 2014 and 2060, whereas the foreign-born population is expected to increase by 36 million, or 85 per cent, reaching approximately 78 million, according to the report.

By 2060, the nation's foreign-born will reach nearly one in five of the total population, from 13 per cent in 2014 to 19 per cent. Also by the year 2060, an estimated 36 per cent of children (people under age 18) will be 'single-race non-Hispanic White', compared with 52 per cent today, the report added.
