US President Barack Obama
US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has extended Diwali wishes in a message posted on Youtube.
In the two-minute video, Obama said the festival of lights was a time to reflect on the year gone by and say a prayer for the months ahead.
The president, accompanied by his wife Michelle, is set to visit India this weekend, arriving in Mumbai on November 6, a day after Diwali, and at the start of the Hindu new year.
Obama said while this is a time for celebration, Diwali is ‘also a time for contemplation, when we remember those who are less fortunate... those who don’t enjoy the rights to speak and worship freely.
‘Our hearts are with them, no just today, but everyday.’
He added: ‘At this sacred time of year let us join together across denominations, religions and cultures to make a habit of empathy and reach out to those most in need, to share the blessings we enjoy and advacnce the cause of peace in all parts of the world.’
