London Mayor Boris Johnson
LONDON mayor Boris Johnson has hailed the “incredible” contribution of the Asian community in Britain.
The mayor, set to be re-elected to his post, visited the Shree Kadwa Patidar Samaj in Wembley and met members of the community on Saturday (April 28).
Johnson said: “When the world comes to this city in the summer they will see an object towering over the Olympic Park.
“It is designed by an Asian artist (Anish Kapoor); built by an Asian architect (Cecil Balmond); and financed by a great Asian businessman (Lakshmi Mittal). And in its central role in the Olympics it symbolises that immense contribution of Asian business to London.
“And it is an incredible fact that the Asian businesses we celebrate tonight contribute about 10 per cent of the UK’s GDP and that over 13 per cent of London businesses are Asian owned.
“I’m proud that London is a fantastically diverse city, boasting not just a great cultural and ethnic mix but also a great mix of ages too. I’m proud that Londoners from all backgrounds contribute a huge amount to the capital’s culture and economy.
“London is one city, with all Londoners, regardless of their age, sexuality, religion, gender or race, able to benefit from the progress London has made over the past four years.”
