Summer revelry: The Slough Mela last year
THOUSANDS of revellers are expected to come together this weekend in one of the biggest celebrations of Asian culture. The annual Slough Mela, which attracts 25,000 people, will feature some of the biggest music acts on the circuit. Bhangra legend Sukshinder Shinda will entertain visitors with his full live band, offering traditional bhangra music with a modern twist. Other big-name artists lined up to perform on Sunday, June 17, in Upton Court Park in Slough, Berkshire, include JK, Club Caramel from Pakistan and Angrez Ali. Ray Siddique, managing director of Asian Star radio, which organises the Slough Mela, said the event is aimed at families. “We target families. You may see well-known, young British-Asian artists but families want to see them as well. “They don’t get a chance to go to concerts or nightclubs so this is the time where they can bring their kids and have a nice day out while seeing these artists they love. We bring these artists who perform at night time events to a day-time mela.” As well as the live music and dancers, there will be fire breathers, stilt walkers and the popular stone-lifting demonstrations, as well as a fun fair, stalls and food. Tickets are priced at the same level as last year – adults £5, children £3, under fives free. Visit www.slough-mela.com or call 01753 362362 for details.
