THE WORLD BANK has given India a $250 million(£162 mn) loan for an irrigation project in a rural part of West Bengal state.

The project is aimed at developing 139,000 hectares (345,000 acres) of irrigated lands in order to boost production by small farmers.

The Bank said 166,000 families would benefit from the loan.

In 2009, the Washington-based institution launched a strategy that calls for $14 billion(£9.1 mn) in loans over three years.
