Currency matters: Indian currency has no symbol to represent it

INDIA has drawn up a shortlist of designs for a symbol to represent its rupee currency to match the dollar, the yen, the pound and the euro.

Five designs based around the letter R - as represented in both the Roman alphabet and Hindi script - will be considered and a winner is to be chosen by ministers.

“The finance ministry wanted the symbol to represent the historical and cultural ethos of the country and called for entries from the public,” the Times of India reported.

It said the five designs had been selected for their simplicity and the fact they are easy to write.

The rupee is currently referred to by the abbreviations “Rs”, “Re” or INR.
