BRITAIN'S deputy prime minister Nick Clegg was the chief guest at this year's GG2 Leadership Awards, hosted by the Asian Media and Marketing Group (AMG), the country's biggest Asian publishing house. Clegg, who spoke on the theme of leadership, also launched the first issue of GG2/EE Power 101, a compilation of the 101 most powerful Asians in Britain.
More than 800 people attended the annual gala celebration of ethnic talent at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on November 23, when 10 special people were recognised for their amazing achievements.
The GG2 Leadership Awards showcase ethnic achievement from all across the UK. All award winners are outstanding individuals who have overcome barriers and excelled against the odds.
This year's winners included Asian peer Lord Navnit Dholakia, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, Darra Singh, chairman of the Riots, Community & Victims Panel and EastEnders actress Nina Wadia. Among those who attended the 13th GG2 Leadership Awards were Dominic Grieve, QC and attorney general for England and Wales, Keith Vaz MP, Lord Swraj Paul and television presenter Manish Bhasin.
Kalpesh Solanki, AMG's managing editor, made a keynote speech calling upon companies to recognise and promote Asian talent in a changing Britain.
Guests at the event enjoyed a sumptuous dinner and were entertained by comedian Shazia Mirza. They also donated generously to the India Heritage Foundation that helps underprivileged children in India.
The awards are adjudicated by an independent panel of judges comprising Yasmin Jetha, chief information officer, Bupa, Terry Mansfield CBE, director, Hearst Corporation, Peter Preston, former editor, The Guardian, Barry Gardiner MP and Ramniklal Solanki CBE, AMG's editor-in-chief.
